I’m taking part in the 99k for Canines with Dogs Trust this February!

I’m making a positive start to 2025 by joining the Dogs Trust 99k for Canines challenge! I will be walking 99km throughout the month of February to raise money for all the dogs in their care.

The aim of Dogs Trust is to give stray and abandoned dogs a second chance at a brighter future with responsible, caring new owners. In 2023, they were able to successfully rehome over 9,000 dogs and cared for a total of 11,464 dogs (including those through their Ukraine quarantine scheme as well as police dogs working at the Commonwealth Games!). With your help Dogs Trust hope to continue helping more dogs in 2025 as the need for their services increases with the current cost of living crisis.

Winston’s Story

Winston’s story as we know it begins when he came into the care of Dogs Trust Ballymena in Ireland. Winston had been found on the streets as a very scared stray. He was not microchipped. Nobody came forward to claim him. After 5-7 days in the local authority dog pound, Winston’s future was bleak. He would be euthanised.

This is where Dogs Trust stepped in and saved his life. Winston was collected in a Dogs Trust ambulance and taken to Ballymena. Winston had an unexplained wound on his head and was so scared the vet at Dogs Trust couldn’t even get close to Winston to examine him properly. Every time the vet got within a few feet of Winston he would lash out.

It took a lot of work and love, but eventually Winston had his microchip, his jabs and his passport. Saying goodbye to Ireland Winston was put into another yellow Dogs Trust ambulance and brought across on the ferry to Dogs Trust Loughborough. At this stage Winston wasn’t ready to be recommend he still needed a lot of help to overcome all of the things he’d been through in his past. Dogs Trust never gave up on him, realising what a special boy he is they worked tirelessly to help him and find him a forever home.

Winston finally found a forever home, but sadly it wasn’t to be. Winston was adopted and moved into his new forever home. Sadly after about a year the family who had Winston were separating and neither partner could keep Winston. Tragically he ended up back at Dogs Trust Loughborough. As time went by it was decided to move Winston to Dogs Trust Shoreham. Dogs Trust had found that smaller Dogs like Winston are popular in the Shoreham rehoming centre so again Winston was on the move. He was driven to Shoreham in exchange for another Dog already at Shoreham.

Winston was partnered with Ali who became his “best friend” at Shoreham. Ali worked with Winston practicing his loose lead walking, obedience and playing his favourite foodie games.

Winston was put up for adoption again. People came and went but Winston hadn’t found his special someone. Roll on January 2018. This is where I came into Winston’s life. I had always wanted a Dog of my own and finally I had the opportunity. Reading Winston’s profile on the Dogs Trust website I excitedly submitted a request to meet Winston. A few days later I was stood in a cold, frosty field. Not aloud to move or look at a Dog that was about to be released from a gate at the side of the field. This was Winston. This strange exercise was to see if Winston was interested in me. Luckily for me Winston saw in me someone he could work for an easy life and lots of treats. He came bounding over to sniff me out. After lots of Doggy dates getting to know Winston on 04.03.18 Winston bid an emotional goodbye to Ali and came home to littlehampton. Finally he had his forever home.
